Dogs, on This River

Federal scientists studying the Chattahoochee found dogs were a primary source of fecal contamination in the river. Closer to home, Georgia EPD lists Bull Creek, Weracoba Creek, and the Chattahoochee through Columbus as impaired.

Federal scientists studying the Chattahoochee found that dogs were a primary source of fecal contamination in the river.

How they know

The study, run by the U.S. Geological Survey for the National Park Service in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, did not guess at the source. It used a canine-specific DNA marker alongside markers for other sources, and the canine marker turned out to be the best single predictor of E. coli levels among the sources they tested.

The marker ran highest in winter and during wet weather. That pattern is the signature of stormwater washing waste off the ground and into the river, rather than wildlife living in the water. Rain falls, runoff moves across lawns and parking lots, and whatever was on the ground goes with it.

What that study is, and is not

Worth saying plainly: that work was done on the Atlanta reach, roughly a hundred miles upstream of Columbus. It is the same river and the same kind of runoff, not a Columbus study. We are not going to claim a finding for our stretch that the scientists did not make.

What is fair to say is that the mechanism does not change between Atlanta and Columbus. A lawn that drains to a storm inlet in Midland or downtown works the same way as one in Roswell.

Closer to home

Georgia EPD keeps the state's list of impaired waters. In Muscogee County it lists Bull Creek, Weracoba Creek, and the Chattahoochee from North Highland Dam to Upatoi Creek as impaired for fecal coliform bacteria. EPD names several urban sources for that bacteria, and domestic animals is one of them, alongside sewer overflows, failing septic systems, and illicit discharges.

We are not going to tell you dogs are the cause of a listing that has multiple contributors. That would not be honest, and EPD does not say it. What is fair to say is that anything left on the ground within a few hundred feet of a storm drain is on a very short path to one of those creeks, and from there to the river people fish and paddle on.

What a schedule does about it

Waste that is picked up on schedule never makes the trip. It does not sit through the next rain, it does not reach the inlet, and it does not add to a load the state is already measuring. That is true for a backyard on a weekly route and it is true for an apartment community's common areas and dog park.

It is a small contribution from any one property. It is also one of the few things about the impaired list that a property manager or a homeowner can control on their own ground.
